wide/broad/bigの使い方　【英語のお話】

今日は“広い”についてのお話です。

辞書で"広い"と調べれば　wide と出てきます。

言葉通り、広いはwideなのですが。なんでもかんでもwide と使うのは間違いです。　

主体になるものが何かによって、広いは主に　wide/broad/bigに分かれます。

【wide】 端から端までの幅の広さを表す

【道】　This street is wide so people can walk side by side. 　　

●この道の幅は広いので、並んで歩くことができる。

 【川】　The Yodo River is 100 meters wide. 

●淀川の幅は100ｍある

 【口】He opened his mouth wide for the dentist. 

●彼は歯医者で大きく口を開けた

 【目】The kids were scared of the monster because of his wide eyes. 

 ●子供たちは目を見開いた化け物に怯えた

【靴】I bought wide sole shoes.　

●足底の広めのくつを買った

 【品揃え】The new shop has a wide selection of clothes.

その新しいお店には服の品ぞろえが豊富だ

【景色】There is a wide panorama from that restaurant on the hill. 

あの丘のレストランからの景色は広大だ！

 【番組】Hikakin TV shows a wide variety of programs.

ヒカキンTVは幅広いプログラムがある

【おしり】Lots of men are interested in women with wide hips.

多くの男性は、おしりが大きな女性に興味を示す

【broad】全体的な広さ・広々のイメージ

【支持】　He won the election as he had broad support from the citizens.

彼は幅広い支持率を得て、選挙に当選した

【川の流域】The Tone River is known as one of the broadest rivers in Japan.

利根川は日本でも流域の広さが大きい川の一つです

【視野】Studying abroad can help people broaden their horizons.

留学はその人の視野を広くさせる経験になる

【肩幅】　My boss used to play rugby so he has broad shoulders. 

上司はラグビーをしていたこともあり、肩幅が広い

【big】　部屋・スペースの広さ

Wow look at the living room, how big!

リビング見て！広い！

The meeting room isn't large enough for 20 people.

会議室に20人は入らないかな・・・

My room is too small for 5 people to sleep in.

私の部屋に5人で寝るのは、きびしいよ・・・
